A weather site with access to a point forecast (general forecast within a smaller area) and a fire weather forecast are both necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Several days prior to burning: <\/strong>Review the long-term general weather<\/p>\n<p><strong>One or two days before the burn: <\/strong>Review the fire weather and spot forecasts<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day of the burn: <\/strong>Review the fire weather and spot forecasts; Obtain a spot forecast for your exact location by calling the National Weather Service Forecast Office for your area.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Review general weather and point forecasts at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Weather Service<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Review fire weather at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/products\/fire_wx\/fwdy1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Weather Service Fire Weather website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Smoke Tools<\/h2>\n<p>Smoke tools should be used to predict the effects of prescribed fire smoke on smoke sensitive areas. The smoke screening tools combined with the weather forecasts help ensure that the prescribed burn is successful.<\/p>\n<p>Useful smoke screening tools:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/fireweather.fdacs.gov\/Simple-Smoke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simple Smoke Screening<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/weather.gfc.state.ga.us\/GoogleVsmoke\/vsmoke-Good2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">VSmoke-Web<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Demonstration: Simple Smoke Screening<\/h3>\n<p>The Simple Smoke Screening tool allows the burner to compare different scenarios in order to choose the best day (in terms of wind) to burn.<\/p>\n<p>To use the <a href=\"http:\/\/fireweather.fdacs.gov\/Simple-Smoke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simple Smoke Screening Tool<\/a>, enter the latitude, longitude, number of acres, fuels, ignition method, and wind direction. Then click &#8220;update the map.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First let\u2019s burn one acre of slash with a head ignition and a SW wind. The result shows that we are expected to spread smoke across Interstate 95. Smoke on roads is not a good situation.<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s change the wind direction to a steady north wind.
